Home of the Sambuca is Italy. Like it's relatives - Ouzo, Pastis or Raki - the base is a distillate flavoured with anise, star anise, liquorice and other spices. Outside Italy a ritual is popular: Three coffee beans are put into the Sambuca glass. With a short torching the Sambuca roasts the coffee beans a bit. When drinking and biting all together the bitter flavours of the roasted beans balance the sweetness of the Sambuca.
